I believe in the free market. Sometimes the free market means people cooperating voluntarily (not for profit) to achieve some goal. Linux is an example of the free market at work. Volunteers who enjoy writing code (or at least have nothing better to do and do it out of habit) want to construct something beautiful (like a sand castle on a beach). Some people have figured out how to make a living out of Linux. More power to them.
There is also a role for proprietary software. I run Windows XP in virtual box on my better Linux machines so I can use programs like Peachtree accounting (my favorite accounting program).
There is room for Linux and Windows.

Ubuntu 11.10 – terminal – sudo apt-get install gnome-shell

log out and choose the gnome shell, and now you can have over 20 desktops (i guess you can have like 99 or something, but my computer started to go slow on 20) I found it very useful,just use Ctrl+Alt+ arrow up/-down, to find the desktop you want to

My daughter used my desktop with limited memory and less than perfect cooling to watch online TV with Windows. Hard drive temp exceeded 40 degrees C and bad things happened to the drive.

I have Ubuntu on the same system on a second hard drive. She can watch online TV with Ubuntu with no temperature problems.

The two drives had similar specs. Memory usage must be more efficient in Ubuntu.

This is a great article, I have ran various version of windows and they are all the same crap, it is like college textbooks every year same book with new cover. Like my tech professor used to say, just eye candy! I have also ran Linux on my laptop and it runs so much smoothly. That it, i am done with windows

Well I know one thing for sure. XP starts to run very slow once its been installed for a while and becomes loaded with tons of programs that try to start themselves when windows starts.

Then theres the whole spyware and adware thing.
